Barnabus to be undead again 8.01.2009

The rumours have been flying fast and furious since San Diego Comic Con. During a panel appearance by Tim Burton where he was talking about his Alice in Wonderland film, it was announced that Burton and Depp would be reuniting again (it almost seems more like now and then they do something separate. It isn't reuniting when you do it all the time.)

The project? The often rumoured revival of Dark Shadows. Seems Johnny Depp has always dreamed of being Barnabus Collins. Who hasn't, eh? But the difference is Depp has the money and star power to make his dream our reality. And that is what he is doing. Some time ago he acquired the rights to Dark Shadows and the stars are finally aligning properly for a film to be made.

For the three of you who don't know, Dark Shadows was a soap opera that ran for over 1200 episodes. The story followed the Collins family and the myriad of supernatural beings in their world. Everything from ghosts to witches to vampires. Forget Young and the Restless, this is a soap opera after my heart. The series ran from 1966-1971. There were a couple of movies made at the time as well. The series experienced a brief revival in 1991 for a dozen prime time episodes. And more recently Big Finish has created original audio dramas based on the show (Several of which have been reviewed in the audio section of the reviews page here.)

Apparently Depp has to go make some small obscure pirate movie sequel where he plays someone named Sparrow. It probably will hardly even be noticed while we await the big project of Dark Shadows.

Something to look forward to. I know I will be there opening day with my kids. Hell, my daughter bought the first set of Dark Shadows DVDs when she was 14.
