In written horror, HorrorWench revisits that catch-up thing she does and gives us her thoughts on Tom Piccirilli's Frayed, and the J.F. Gonzalez and Mike Oliveri collaboration Restore >From Backup. And over on the Hollywood side of things, Hyde tortures himself at the theater and then bleeds all over us with his words of warning regarding the new Halloween--and yes, there's a live thread for this one in the Cesspool!

Check out: Zombiebrat's glowing [almost to the point of embarrassment] review of Brian Keene's Dead Sea and her not-so-shiny review of Joe McKinney's Dead City. Wrapping up this batch for WIB, 9fingers has a nice middle of the road thought or two for Scott Nicholson's They Hunger. Over in the movie section we have Flunky's take on Blood and Chocolate, and Hyde's unhappiness with The Thirst.

A plethora of chewy goodness in the review department for your Friday morning entertainment [and possibly weekend shopping list!].

In Hollywood, Jekyll agrees with Hyde regarding Monster Squad, calls Perfect Creatures a change of pace, and then moans, loudly, at The Last Supper.

In the world of all things written--big and small--several reviewers pipe in with thoughts. 9fingers regretfully doesn't enjoy Brett Alexander Savory & Gord Zajac's The Distance Travelled: A Little Slice of Heavan. HorrorWench throws a mediocre review at Kealan Patrick Burke's You In? and calls Lee Thomas names for Dust of Wonderland. And ZombieBrat gets confused and enjoys it, over Christine Morgan's Tell No Tales.

They're everywhere! They're everywhere!!

Well, okay, only in Written and Hollywood, but there are several new ones to choose from. In the world of horror lit, Bloody shreds Karen Koehler's Blackburn & Scarletti Mysteries, Vol. 2 [with apologies], and the rest of us are working on our TBR piles [patience, grasshopper!]. On film, Jekyll and Hyde love, hate, and meh at several new offerings and one slightly used one [2005]. Check out Hyde's thoughts on Monster Squad and Perfume: Story of a Murderer, and then wander over to Jekyll's take on Isolation and 1408.

There you go--happy Friday! Rumor has it there will be several more written reviews, and several updates [including some new games!] by the end of the weekend... stay tuned.

Heading into the weekend we offer you Jekyll's take on the film about serial killer Richard Speck, Chicago Massacre; Flunky's latest indie review for Heading Home; Hyde's lost review [ok, it wasn't lost, but I somehow missed it when it was posted] of Hostel 2; and finally, Hyde moonlighting as a book reviewer for Seth Grahame-Smith's How to Survive a Horror Movie.

This: Renfield has posted a new review, for a vampire book... that he liked. (I'll pause for a moment so that sinks in) Check out his raving review for Derek Gunn's Vampire Apocalypse.

That: Hollywood Horror has been updated, contests have closed, winners will be notified/announced, and the beginning of 'blockbuster season' has begun. Which movies are you looking forward to?

And a poster! "When one door closes, another opens" has never been quite so obvious around these parts before. A DVD contest closed on Tuesday and now we've got a poster for the same movie on Thursday... go... go try and win it on Hollywood Horror!

~ Jekyll is still plowing through her review piles and offers up three more for your entertainment--sometimes that entertainment is found in the review, not the movie. Check out her thoughts on the 2006 versions of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Fallen Angels and The Grand Horror.

~ Minion is not dead--we promise--but he has reverted from Indie Films to Video Games for a moment with a five-star review of F.E.A.R. for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

~ And just when you thought our intern was long gone... her review of Rod Gudino's [creator of Rue Morgue] Demonology of Desire has been posted with bonus material. Check out her thoughts on the film and extra material presented at the Toronto screening, and her quick Q & A with Rod.

There you go. Better than the morning paper and you don't even have to dig around in the neighbor's rose bush or go up on your roof to find it--grab your coffee and cruise the reviews!

Ah, long weekends. Time to relax, visit the family, try something new, and maybe catch a little entertainment. And what did our reviewers do this weekend? Well...

Although I'm not sure Flunky would call it entertainment, she tackled Skeleton Man--and lost... horribly. Jekyll wandered through the reviews, backing up Hyde's opinions of Stay Alive and Pan's Labyrinth, before getting lost and stumbling over to the bookshelf to nod at Christopher Pike's The Blind Mirror. The rest of us? Note the second sentence up there and stick to the first two options... but we're back and working on things for you!! Meanwhile, go check out Jekyll & Flunky's thoughts...

Whether you're reading it, watching it, or just trying to win it--we've got you covered!

Trying to figure out what to watch? The release schedule in the left column of Hollywood Horror has been updated through June to let you know what's coming. And while you're there, don't forget to enter your name for a chance to win a DVD in the two newest contests--Dark Corners & Pan's Labyrinth. Of course, if you need an opinion to roll around your mind, Jekyll and Hyde have you covered! He says 28 Weeks Later is all that, and a bag a chips. She says Wilderness is the dip that goes with those chips. [Yes, they both liked movies this week--it's ok to worry, I'm a little nervous about it as well.] Jekyll also revisits The Devil's Backbone in preparation for Pan's Labyrinth, some reports claim they are companion pieces.

In the written world, the veteran reviewers are slacking and letting the new kids on the block run with things. Gwendythlove [Gwendi] has posted her first review [the positive one] for Sara Gran's Come Closer. Moving right along, Zombiebrat has posted her second review [the negative training tool] and takes a bite out of Laurel K. Hamilton's Danse Macabre.

Oh, and because I'm pokey and forgot to draw for the Top 10 Most Sadistic Ways to Die contest yesterday, I'll give you one more shot at it. Head on over and list your top 10 by 5pm tomorrow [Thurs. 5.17.07] to be eligible...

Opinions, judgement and criticism... oh it's just a good time on the Dark Reviews lately! Let's play a little catchup and give you some reading material, shall we? On the screens, big and little, Hyde's plowing through his pile and offers up two films availabe on DVD. The Hitcher remake and the indie film The Eye 10 [and has he says in the review, no the 10 is not a typo].

In the world of words we have a handful of praise, one lone ugly duckling and a new kid on the block. Renfield enjoyed Brian Knight's Hacks, and HorrorWench and Kealan Patrick Burke make up over Midlisters. BloodyMary cries about William Veselik's Weep Not for the Vampire. And bringing up the rear our one of our new reviewers-in-training, ZombieBrat, who gives her thoughts on Brian Keene's Ghoul [ya'll were wondering if we were ever going to review that one, weren't ya?].

Holy Updates, Batman!

First the normal stuff: Hollywood Horror and Written in Blood have both been updated, new information, new shopping lists. Also, the Stephen King [Stoker] theme to the games department is now complete--check out the new Bloody Quiz!

1. The reviewer position has been filled. I can only train/work with so many bodies at a time and we have two great candidates on the chopping block right now [of course, if they die out, we'll put the notice back up]. Thank you to everyone that applied, emailed and showed interest. Please feel free to wander over to the Cesspool and welcome them, and of course, poke them with a stick--they'll need some fresh scars if they're going to survive this jungle!! Book & Magazine Reviewer Position Opening: Must be well read, understand spelling, grammar and critiquing [i.e. be able to write a coherent review], and enjoy reading. Must be honest and unafraid to have an opinion that differs from the rest of the planet. Must be 18 and have the ability to either read on the screen at length or equipment to print manuscripts when necessary. Should have time available for at least one review a week, plus appearances on the "Cesspool" message board. Unique personality a plus. Previous experience unnecessary, willing to train. Preference will be given to females, as this position is to round out our team. Three reviews for you today and maybe three more tomorrow (cuz I know that Renfield is holding out). Today's gems are all in Hollywood Horror and strangely, Jekyll and Hyde agree. We'll cover the fresh review first, while we wait for you to get back into your chair. Flunky not only checks out the new indie from Borowski, the man that brought us HH Holmes, but liked it--check out her thoughts on Albert Fish (but remember, this is Albert Fish--so no eating).
