Marilyn Manson and Rachael Wood to Star in SPLATTER SISTERS |
05-17-10 7:39pm, Absinthe |
Marilyn Manson and his 22-year-old fiancée, actress Evan Rachel Wood, will star in an upcoming horror-slasher movie called Splatter Sisters, which is the epitome of art imitating life: last year, Manson -- who had yet to reconcile with his on-again, off-again girlfriend -- told SPIN.com, "I have fantasies every day about smashing [Wood's] skull in with a sledgehammer."
Now that's quality casting.
According to Variety, Splatter Sisters -- described as a "sexploitation-serial-killer-slasher-road-movie circa 1989" -- will be produced by Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green and film vet Edward R. Pressman (American Psycho, Bad Lieutenant). Adam Bhala Lough, the man behind the 2008 Lil Wayne documentary The Carter, will direct.
"This is a role Marilyn Manson was born to play, and with Evan Rachel Wood bringing dramatic gravity to the ensemble, I have no doubt this will take the horror genre to a new level," Green said at the Cannes International Film Festival, where Splatter Sisters was announced.
Added Pressman: "Lough's unique talent and energy will make Splatter Sisters a very special and markedly commercial film. I've always been attracted to smart movies about killers made by directors with a real vision."
No word yet on a release date, but Variety reports that Splatter Sisters is the first film a new franchise.

Rue Morgue's CUT THROATS NINE |
05-17-10 7:26pm, Absinthe |
Toronto, CANADA – Spain’s Rodar Y Rodar and Canada’s Rue Morgue Cinema are proud to announce their production partnership in the feature film CUT THROATS NINE, a high action remake of the 1972 Spanish/Italian western Condenados a vivir. CUT THROATS NINE will star Danish superstar MADS MIKKELSEN (Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans) along with veteran Hollywood actor HARVEY KEITEL (Pulp Fiction, Bad Lieutenant) and Canadian luminary ROY DUPUIS (The Rocket, La Femme Nikita).
The project will be helmed by award-winning director Rodrigo Gudiño (The Facts In the Case of Mister Hollow) from a script by Gudiño and Joseph O’Brien (RoboCop: Prime Directives) based on a story by Joaquin Romero Marchent and Santiago Moncada. Award winning cinematographer Derek Rogers C.S.C. (Cube, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) is slated to lens the picture, with Kyle Glencross (300, Dawn of the Dead) handling the film’s special effects. Producing will be Rue Morgue’s Marco Pecota and Rodar Y Rodar’s Joaquín Padró and Mar Targarona.
“We are very happy to have found partners who we feel are a great fit for the project,” remarked Pecota.
CUT THROATS NINE follows a wagonload of convicts as they travel the northern mountains to carry out their death sentences. Following a surprise attack from a gang of bandits, only the sergeant, his beautiful young daughter and seven of the most sadistic, murderous men alive survive the assault. CUT THROATS NINE in an original crowd pleasing experience that pushes the relatively subdued excesses of both the western and the horror movie into creative new territory.
CUT THROATS NINE is slated to go into production in Toronto in early 2011.
In 2007 Rodar y Rodar developed and produced “The Orphanage”, directed by J.A. Bayona and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro which went on to become the biggest international box-office hit ever for a Spanish-language film. This year, Rodar Y Rodar are premiering “Julia’s Eyes”, directed by Guillem Morales and produced by Guillermo del Toro, at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rue Morgue Cinema in association with Someone At The Door Productions has two other films in development, including the animated feature “Weaver Island” and the caustic drama “Grown Up Suzanne”.

GODKILLER You-Demand-It Theatrical Tour Adds 8 Cities |
05-17-10 7:19pm, Absinthe |
Indie sci-fi/horror animated film Godkiller (which Bloody-Disgusting called "an instant hit") has added eight cities to its You-Demand-It Theatrical Tour, while word has come down from VOD partner Gravitas Ventures that 19 of the 20 major cable-VOD providers have selected Godkiller for their summer programming, insuring the film will be available in over 75 million homes starting May 25th.
"Now that's just ridiculous," said writer-director Matt Pizzolo. "I set out to make a movie for misfits, lunatics, and sociopaths... based on the response, I can only say it's refreshing to see so many crazy people are in positions of influence. Our weird little mind-bomb will be invading a lot of homes this summer."
The next set of theatrical cities are:
- May 28: Providence, RI @ Cable Car Cinema
- May 30: Knoxville, TN @ The Ciderhouse
- June 4: Indianapolis, IN @ Cinema Grill
- June 4: Grand Rapids, MI @ Wealthy Theatre
- June 11: Milwaukee, WI @ Rosebud Cinema
- July 2: San Antonio, TX @ Bijou Cinema Bistro
- July 2: Albuquerque, NM @ The Guild Cinema
- July 3: Tomball, TX @ Silverado IMAX
The VOD carriers supporting Godkiller include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter, Verizon, Cablevision, DirecTV, Dish, RCN, Insight, Mediacom, Bresnan, Suddenlink, Rogers, Videotron, Sasktel, Cogeco, Shaw, Telus, and more; as well as digital carriers Amazon, Apple iTunes, Playstation Network, and Xbox Live.
To make room for the ongoing You-Demand-It tour (which continues to book additional cities), Godkiller's DVD/Blu-ray street date has been pushed to July 20, 2010 (coinciding with Godkiller events at the San Diego Comic Con).
"Theatrical events offer a shared experience for the core audience and VOD makes it super accessible and inexpensive for casual viewers, so that makes DVD & Blu-ray more of collectibles... with that in mind we're going to use the extra time to make the DVD & Blu-ray extra awesome," explained Pizzolo.
The twisted, sci-fi/horror adventure about a teenage boy's
odyssey to find a new heart for his dying sister in a post-nuke wasteland of fallen gods, organ-stealing hookers, and sex-addicted technowizards, Godkiller was directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Pizzolo (Threat) with illustrations by Anna Muckcracker and music by Alec Empire and Atari Teenage Riot, starring genre-heroes Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Danielle Harris (Halloween 4, 5, I, II), Bill Moseley (The Devil's Rejects), Nicki Clyne (Battlestar Galactica), Tiffany Shepis (Night of the Demons), alt-culture icon Lydia Lunch (Hardcore), and rockstars Justin Pierre (singer of Motion City Soundtrack) and Davey Havok (singer of AFI).
"An instant hit." (--Theo Scheresky, Bloody Disgusting)
"A horrific yarn of apocalypse, quantum physics, culture jamming & conspiracy theory." (--Scott Thill, Wired)
"Intriguing... mixes dark visuals, graphic violence, profanity and a speed metal soundtrack into an oddly alluring post-nuclear holocaust." (--John DeNardo, SF Signal)
"An adventure through a frightening, violent post-apocalyptic landscape." (--Michael Gingold, Fangoria)
Godkiller: Walk Among Us is the epic story of a boy on a quest to save his dying sister. Based on the comic book Pizzolo created with Anna Muckcracker, Godkiller takes place in a dark-future after economic collapse, after nuclear holy war, and after Earth is colonized by alien races. Tommy and his kid sister Lucy live in an orphanage in one of the few remaining city-states, but Lucy is critically ill and desperately in need of a new heart. Tommy's odyssey to find a new heart for his sister begins when he follows an organ-stealing prostitute named Halfpipe out of the city-state and into the savage borderland known as Outer City. "A horrific yarn of apocalypse, quantum physics, culture jamming & conspiracy theory." (--Wired)

Hammer Horror Goes 3-D |
05-13-10 7:54pm, Absinthe |

The reactivated Hammer Films will get into the 3-D arena with an upcoming horror film called The Woman in Black, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), the movie follows a lawyer who begins seeing an eerie woman dressed all in black around a recently deceased client's house while he's there to settle the client's affairs.
Sounds spooky already, but executive producer Guy East told the Reporter that "the recent decision to shoot the film in 3-D will create a genuinely immersive experience for the audience." Filming the movie with 3-D cameras instead of converting it in post-production is likely to make the visual experience much higher quality, if more expensive to produce (you hear that, Clash of the Titans?).
Scheduled to go into production this fall, The Woman in Black is based on a 1983 novel by Susan Hill which has already been adapted previously in the U.K. as a 1987 stage play (which is still running) and a 1989 TV movie for the ITV network. The script for the new film is being written by Jane Goldman, who co-adapted Kick-Ass with director Matthew Vaughn and is currently working with Vaughn on the screenplay for X-Men: First Class.
Hammer, of course, is the legendary British studio that was famous in the '50s, '60s and '70s for its classic series of movies based around Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and other monsters, mostly starring horror icons Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. The studio was also home to a number of very cool sci-fi flicks, such as the Quatermass series, One Million Years B.C. and These Are the Damned. The Quatermass movies were, in a way, a more Earthbound predecessor to Doctor Who, while One Million Years B.C. featured Raquel Welch in a furry bikini.
The studio went under in the early '80s, but several comebacks have been attempted. The latest, with the backing of a Dutch conglomerate and $100 million in funding, has actually managed to get movies into production under the Hammer banner for the first time in more than 30 years. Among those are Let Me In, the English-language remake of the brilliant Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, and The Resident, a thriller starring Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and, in a nice touch, Christopher Lee.

DARK CRYSTAL Sequel in the Works |
05-05-10 2:02pm, Absinthe |
Australian based Omnilab Media is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company to bring the much anticipated fantasy sequel, "Power of the Dark Crystal" to the big screen in stereoscopic 3D. The highly anticipated film will be among the most ambitious projects to ever be produced in Australia.
Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig, writers and directors of "Undead" and most recently, "Daybreakers," have come aboard to direct the screenplay written by Australian Craig Pearce ("Moulin Rouge," "Strictly Ballroom," "Romeo + Juliet") based on an original script by Annette Duffy and David Odell. The legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud will reprise his role as conceptual designer of the film, which will use a stunning mix of live action and traditional puppetry combined with visual and special effects produced entirely in Australia. Omnilab-affiliated Iloura ("Where the Wild Things Are," "The Pacific," "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark") has already begun work on the film's complex CGI elements. With this team in place, next steps will be to secure worldwide distribution.
Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, "Power of the Dark Crystal" follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.

The MUMMY'S CURSE Lives at Dimension |
05-05-10 1:58pm, Absinthe |

Dimension Films, King of the Hill director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and Douglas Wick (Gladiator) are coming together to tap into the lore of the Mummy.
The Los Angeles Times says Lopez-Gallego is writing, and will direct, a film about "a mummy curse, with the action playing out very much in the unseen realm, as both the audience and the characters frequently experience the effects of the curse without seeing it explicitly."
The film will be called The Mummy Archives and is budgeted around the $5 million range. A far cry from the bloated budgets of Universal's "Mummy" franchise.
