Marcon 45 Sci-Fi Convention to Explore Horror |
05-26-10 8:34am, Absinthe |
The oldest and largest Ohio convention of science fiction and fantasy is turning toward horror.
Marcon 45, to run Friday through Sunday at the Hyatt Regency and Greater Columbus Convention Center, has selected "Necropolis: A Year of Horror" as its theme.
"Horror is a chance to scare yourself but know you're really safe," said Kim Williams, head of the Marcon organizing committee. "It lets you get that rush of adrenaline, and then you can chuckle with your friends."
As in previous years, Marcon will continue to offer program tracks on science fiction, fantasy, science and other subjects - but the themed talks and panel discussions this year will explore the roots of horror and ways of expressing it.
"Horror and science fiction do tend to go hand in hand, especially in modern movies like Alien and Aliens," said Carrie Franklin, programming chairwoman. "And one of the themes of science fiction is science gone wrong - dramatized by the older, black-and-white Frankenstein movies."
Among the speakers: authors Casey Daniels ( Don of the Dead), Shane Moore ( Death of Kings) and Wen Spencer ( Tinker); artist Billy Tackett ( My Bloody Wedding); and actor Richard Hatch ( Battlestar Galactica).
A haunted house will open at 10 p.m. Saturday, and the annual ZombieWalk Columbus will happen Saturday.

AMITYVILLE HORROR House for Sale |
05-26-10 8:31am, Absinthe |
AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — The house made famous in the 1979 film The Amityville Horror is up for sale in New York — ghosts not included.
The five-bedroom Dutch Colonial went on the market Monday for $1.15 million.
The Oscar-nominated film is based on the story of the Lutz family's brief stay in the house in 1975 after six members of the DeFeo family were shot and killed as they slept in the home. Eldest son Ronald DeFeo Jr. was convicted of the murders.
The crime spawned a book and a series of movies that chronicled various supernatural horrors, including visions of walls oozing slime, moving furniture and a visit from a demonic pig named Jodie. The original film stars James Brolin and Margot Kidder.
Neighbors say gawkers still occasionally come by, mostly on Halloween.

KING KONG 3-D Coming to Universal Theme Park |
05-26-10 8:19am, Absinthe |
“King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson,
The World’s Largest Most Intense 3-D Experience,
Emerges as a Next-Generation Theme Park Experience
At Universal Studios Hollywood , The Entertainment Capital of L.A.SM
Universal City, California --King Kong, among the screen’s most powerful and enduring icons, will re-emerge in Summer 2010 as a new signature attraction created under the direction of Peter Jackson on the famed Universal Studios HollywoodSM Studio Tour.
“King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson will be the world's largest most intense 3D experience on the planet, combining thrilling visceral effects to create a next-generation theme park experience.
Peter Jackson, director of the Oscar®-winning 2005 Universal Pictures film upon which the attraction is based, said: “The new King Kong at Universal Studios Hollywood will be an incredible amount of fun and a chance to really push film and theme park technology. Aboard the Universal tram, you'll get a wrap-around view of the action through a process involving eight 3-D images shot and projected at 60 frames per second. The film and tram will be tied into a motion simulator that will allow you to physically experience this pulse-pounding spectacle, which includes a fight between Kong and a group of V-Rex, the larger cousins of the T-Rex. You’ll find yourself right in the middle of the action."
“King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson will be the first theme park attraction to be directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker.
Larry Kurzweil, President and Chief Operating Officer, Universal Studios Hollywood, said: “King Kong has been an integral part of Universal Studios Hollywood for decades and, after the 2008 fire, we knew he had to be reintroduced as a new, groundbreaking, thoroughly over-the-top experience that will thrill new generations of Studio Tour guests. King Kong 360 will be the most exhilarating feature of our world-famous Studio Tour, setting the bar at a new level for immersive theme park experiences.”
In the new attraction, guests will be given special 3-D glasses as they enter a darkened soundstage aboard the Studio Tour trams and will be transported— via the magic of Surround Digital 3D projection —deep into a tangled jungle location. They’ll survive a close encounter with a swarm of hungry raptors, only to be confronted by the terrifying presence of 35' tall dinosaur behemoths, intent on attacking the tram and Studio Tour guests.
Suddenly, a 25' tall gorilla appears - Kong himself! The trams jolt and shudder as the guests find themselves caught in the middle of a titanic struggle between these colossal prehistoric foes - the great ape and carnivorous reptiles - action which sends the packed trams sliding ever closer to the edge of a bottomless chasm.
King Kong, known as “the eighth wonder of the world,” has been called “the experience for which movies were invented.” Since first appearing on the screen in the 1933 original classic, “King Kong” has been re-made twice, each time on a tremendous scale, earning a total of seven Oscar® and three Golden Globe® nominations. Most recently, Peter Jackson’s 2005 version took classic elements of the original “King Kong” story and adrenalized them with up-to-the-minute effects magic and the alchemic talents of a superlative group of filmmakers, cast and crew. Released to critical acclaim in late 2005, “King Kong” was a worldwide hit.
The arrival of the new “King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson experience coincides with major enhancements to the iconic Studio Tour. The most extensive backlot construction ever in the history of Universal Studios, which includes re-creations of legendary Hollywood sets and the introduction of brand-new shooting locations, will make the renowned Studio buzz with star-studded film and television production as never before. Studio trams were recently equipped as "mobile movie theaters" with state-of-the-art flat-screen high-definition monitors and digital playback systems. The new high-definition monitors feature commentary from filmmakers, actors and personalities. Clips from numerous movie and television productions, corresponding to sites visited along the Tour route, add a new dimension to the tour of backlot attractions, sets and facades.

Black Sabbath's Ronnie James Dio Dead at 67 |
05-17-10 8:52pm, Absinthe |
One of heavy metal's best known rock heroes, Ronnie James Dio, passed away the morning of May 16th at 67. Known as the man who popularized the "sign of the horns," Ronnie James Dio was in Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, and his lyrics were always loaded with references to black magic, devil-themes, evil tomes, witches, wizards and the underworld. He had been battling stomach cancer.
His wife Wendy released this statement: "Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Trent Reznor's New Band Debut Gory Video! |
05-17-10 7:51pm, Absinthe |
When it comes to blood and gore, Trent Reznor and his wife Mariqueen Maandig's new band, How To Destroy Angels, are giving M.I.A's genocidal new video some fierce competition.
The band just released their new clip for "The Space in Between," from their self-titled six-track EP, out this summer, and it's a total horror show: the newly-wed couple are found murdered, laying face-down in a pool of their own blood in a hotel room, where they're soon set ablaze. Yowsa. Watch below.
The song, a NIN-esque affair with brooding electro beats, buzz saw guitars, and atmospheric flourishes, only expounds on the video's ominous vibe. In the clip, ex-West Indian Girl frontwoman Maandig, whose corpse is propped up on a blood-soaked bed, next to her hubby, sings the frightening ballad: "All the blood lying on the floor… / Arms entwined in a final pose / Narrative drawing to a close." The flames soon engulf her, melting the skin off her gorgeous face, while a man and woman (presumably the perpetrators) sit on a couch, smoking cigarettes and watching their victims burn.

Marilyn Manson and Rachael Wood to Star in SPLATTER SISTERS |
05-17-10 7:39pm, Absinthe |
Marilyn Manson and his 22-year-old fiancée, actress Evan Rachel Wood, will star in an upcoming horror-slasher movie called Splatter Sisters, which is the epitome of art imitating life: last year, Manson -- who had yet to reconcile with his on-again, off-again girlfriend -- told SPIN.com, "I have fantasies every day about smashing [Wood's] skull in with a sledgehammer."
Now that's quality casting.
According to Variety, Splatter Sisters -- described as a "sexploitation-serial-killer-slasher-road-movie circa 1989" -- will be produced by Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green and film vet Edward R. Pressman (American Psycho, Bad Lieutenant). Adam Bhala Lough, the man behind the 2008 Lil Wayne documentary The Carter, will direct.
"This is a role Marilyn Manson was born to play, and with Evan Rachel Wood bringing dramatic gravity to the ensemble, I have no doubt this will take the horror genre to a new level," Green said at the Cannes International Film Festival, where Splatter Sisters was announced.
Added Pressman: "Lough's unique talent and energy will make Splatter Sisters a very special and markedly commercial film. I've always been attracted to smart movies about killers made by directors with a real vision."
No word yet on a release date, but Variety reports that Splatter Sisters is the first film a new franchise.

Rue Morgue's CUT THROATS NINE |
05-17-10 7:26pm, Absinthe |
Toronto, CANADA – Spain’s Rodar Y Rodar and Canada’s Rue Morgue Cinema are proud to announce their production partnership in the feature film CUT THROATS NINE, a high action remake of the 1972 Spanish/Italian western Condenados a vivir. CUT THROATS NINE will star Danish superstar MADS MIKKELSEN (Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans) along with veteran Hollywood actor HARVEY KEITEL (Pulp Fiction, Bad Lieutenant) and Canadian luminary ROY DUPUIS (The Rocket, La Femme Nikita).
The project will be helmed by award-winning director Rodrigo Gudiño (The Facts In the Case of Mister Hollow) from a script by Gudiño and Joseph O’Brien (RoboCop: Prime Directives) based on a story by Joaquin Romero Marchent and Santiago Moncada. Award winning cinematographer Derek Rogers C.S.C. (Cube, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) is slated to lens the picture, with Kyle Glencross (300, Dawn of the Dead) handling the film’s special effects. Producing will be Rue Morgue’s Marco Pecota and Rodar Y Rodar’s Joaquín Padró and Mar Targarona.
“We are very happy to have found partners who we feel are a great fit for the project,” remarked Pecota.
CUT THROATS NINE follows a wagonload of convicts as they travel the northern mountains to carry out their death sentences. Following a surprise attack from a gang of bandits, only the sergeant, his beautiful young daughter and seven of the most sadistic, murderous men alive survive the assault. CUT THROATS NINE in an original crowd pleasing experience that pushes the relatively subdued excesses of both the western and the horror movie into creative new territory.
CUT THROATS NINE is slated to go into production in Toronto in early 2011.
In 2007 Rodar y Rodar developed and produced “The Orphanage”, directed by J.A. Bayona and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro which went on to become the biggest international box-office hit ever for a Spanish-language film. This year, Rodar Y Rodar are premiering “Julia’s Eyes”, directed by Guillem Morales and produced by Guillermo del Toro, at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rue Morgue Cinema in association with Someone At The Door Productions has two other films in development, including the animated feature “Weaver Island” and the caustic drama “Grown Up Suzanne”.

Our weird little mind-bomb will be invading a lot of homes this summer."
The next set of theatrical cities are:

To make room for the ongoing You-Demand-It tour (which continues to book additional cities), Godkiller's DVD/Blu-ray street date has been pushed to July 20, 2010 (coinciding with Godkiller events at the San Diego Comic Con).
"Theatrical events offer a shared experience for the core audience and VOD makes it super accessible and inexpensive for casual viewers, so that makes DVD & Blu-ray more of collectibles... with that in mind we're going to use the extra time to make the DVD & Blu-ray extra awesome," explained Pizzolo.

Tommy's odyssey to find a new heart for his sister begins when he follows an organ-stealing prostitute named Halfpipe out of the city-state and into the savage borderland known as Outer City. Hammer Horror Goes 3-D |
05-13-10 7:54pm, Absinthe |

The reactivated Hammer Films will get into the 3-D arena with an upcoming horror film called The Woman in Black, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), the movie follows a lawyer who begins seeing an eerie woman dressed all in black around a recently deceased client's house while he's there to settle the client's affairs.
Sounds spooky already, but executive producer Guy East told the Reporter that "the recent decision to shoot the film in 3-D will create a genuinely immersive experience for the audience." Filming the movie with 3-D cameras instead of converting it in post-production is likely to make the visual experience much higher quality, if more expensive to produce (you hear that, Clash of the Titans?).
Scheduled to go into production this fall, The Woman in Black is based on a 1983 novel by Susan Hill which has already been adapted previously in the U.K. as a 1987 stage play (which is still running) and a 1989 TV movie for the ITV network. The script for the new film is being written by Jane Goldman, who co-adapted Kick-Ass with director Matthew Vaughn and is currently working with Vaughn on the screenplay for X-Men: First Class.
Hammer, of course, is the legendary British studio that was famous in the '50s, '60s and '70s for its classic series of movies based around Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and other monsters, mostly starring horror icons Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. The studio was also home to a number of very cool sci-fi flicks, such as the Quatermass series, One Million Years B.C. and These Are the Damned. The Quatermass movies were, in a way, a more Earthbound predecessor to Doctor Who, while One Million Years B.C. featured Raquel Welch in a furry bikini.
The studio went under in the early '80s, but several comebacks have been attempted. The latest, with the backing of a Dutch conglomerate and $100 million in funding, has actually managed to get movies into production under the Hammer banner for the first time in more than 30 years. Among those are Let Me In, the English-language remake of the brilliant Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, and The Resident, a thriller starring Hilary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and, in a nice touch, Christopher Lee.

The video was directed by David ‘House’ Greathouse, whose music videos for Mushroomhead won him MTV2’s ‘Headbangers Ball Best Music Video of 2007’ award and a spot on the new "Saw VI" DVD. Robert Kurtzman (creator of "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Wishmaster") and his company Precinct 13 Entertainment co-produced the video which will also be included as an extra feature on "The Dead Matter" DVD.
"Dark Legacy" was shot at the historic and reputedly haunted Phantasy Theatre in Lakewood Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland.

Theatre Bizarre Presents |
05-10-10 4:48pm, Absinthe |
Their Halloween Masquerade Balls are horrific nights of mayhem. What will go on this month at their party is anybody's guess, but we can be sure it will be fun, scary and memorable. Coming Saturday, May 22, at 9pm, Theatre Bizarre, 967 W. State Fair in Detroit presents an evening of...of...
well, we're not quite sure, but if we were in Michigan, we would go!
Highlights of the evening should be 3 episodes of "The Ded Dave Show" (Detroit-based skit-com about what Zombies do when they are not eating you), plus live performances. There will be a Zombie fashion show, burlesque + eating contest. And someone named Eduardo Gallagher will be there with his "Mallet of Doom."
In describing a past Theatre Bizarre, a reviewer named Sara wrote, "It isn't often that I am at a lack for words, but after going to Detroit's Theater Bizarre on Saturday I'm, well, speechless. This sort of carnival, playground, for adults is something one needs to experience, as words don't nearly do it the justice it deserves."
If you dress like a Zombie, admission is only $3, $5 to non-Zombies. WARNING: LIVE ACTS AT THIS EVENT INVOLVE THE SPRAYING OF HUMAN BLOOD! DRESS ACCORDINGLY!
