THE SHINIING - Still the Scariest This Halloween |
10-27-09 1:42pm, Absinthe |
Stanley Kubrick's classic 1980 movie The Shining has been named the scariest
horror film ever, topping a list of 100 scary movies by top film website
Totalscifionline.com.
Rosemary's Baby, by controversial director Roman Polanski came in second
place, while British cult classic The Wicker Man, famous for Britt Ekland’s
naked dancing, was third.
The Shining stars Jack Nicholson and is based on a story by famous horror
writer Stephen King. It tells the story of a frustrated writer who tries to
murder his family in the isolated hotel where they are snowed in for the
winter.
Though it received mixed reviews on its release in 1980 (and picked up
nominations at the ‘alternative Oscars’ the Razzies for Worst Director and
Worst Actress), its reputation has grown over the years, as subsequent
generations in search of Halloween thrills have been terrified by its dark
psychological themes and unforgettable imagery.
“Nearly 30 years after its initial release, The Shining remains an
unparalled study in isolation, madness and paranoia,” says Matt McAllister,
editor of Totalscifionline.com. “The expansive sets, surreal visuals, and an
intense performance from Jack Nicholson add up to a film guaranteed to give
viewers a sleepless night.”
Classic imagery and dialogue from The Shining which have entered popular
culture include the spooky twin girls in the hotel corridor, the word
“redrum” (murder backwards), the repeated phrase “All work and no play make
Jack a dull boy,” and Jack Nicholson announcing, “Here’s Johnny!” as he
smashes through a door with an axe. In recent years, the film’s classic
status has seen it lovingly parodied on shows such as The Simpsons and
Family Guy.

PARANORMAL Director Inspired by His Own Haunted House |
10-26-09 6:44pm, Absinthe |
OREN PELI's new horror movie PARANORMAL ACTIVITY was inspired by spooky goings-on in the director's own home.
Peli shot the film in his bedroom and created all the special effects using his home computer, but it has quickly become a box office sensation, returning a staggering $40 million (GBP27 million) on his budget of just $15,000 (GBP10,000).
The director admits he came up with the idea after a series of eerie sleepless nights at his house in southern California.
Peli tells the New York Daily News, "There were a couple of things that were hard to explain. I never thought we had a ghost or we were dealing with a supernatural phenomenon. But that's what got me thinking..."

Hammer Glamour: A History of Horror's Leading Ladies |
10-26-09 6:41pm, Absinthe |
There is a special place reserved in the history of film for the gothic kitsch of "Hammer horror."
During the 1950s and 60s, British Hammer Film Productions developed an international reputation for low-budget yet lavishly-designed romantic chillers.
Today, Hammer is most commonly associated with the career-defining roles of its leading men, namely Peter Cushing's Frankenstein and Christopher Lee in "Dracula."
Less commonly remembered is the wealth of highly-glamorous roles for distressed damsels and femme-fatales alike.
Continental beauties like Ingrid Pitt, Hollywood film stars such as Ursula Andress, and provincial English girls like Veronica Carlson, would all become leading ladies under Hammer.
However, with George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" setting a new standard in the portrayal of explicit gore and others, like Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby", offering audiences a more artful and sophisticated horror experience, Hammer began to fall out of fashion in the 1970s.
The company resorted to amplifying the sexual content of their films, with the likes of "To the Devil A Daughter" featuring a young Nastassja Kinski in the role of an infrequently-dressed teenage nun.
By 1984, having departed from films to concentrate on television dramas, Hammer ceased production altogether. Now, after over 20 years, Hammer is set to make a return to the big screen with an English production of Swedish vampire tale "Let the Right One In" scheduled for release in 2010.

KEITH RICHARDS AT SPIKE TV’S “SCREAM 2009”
Taylor Lautner Wins Breakout Performance Award And Debuts World Premiere Footage Of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”
Franchise Reboot Of “Star Trek” Tops The Competition With Six Honors With Original Captain Kirk, William Shatner, On Hand
“SCREAM 2009” Premieres Tuesday, October 27 At 10 PM, ET/PT On Spike TV
Two vampire sagas thrived at night at “SCREAM 2009,” the first and only event honoring the best in fantasy, sci-fi, comics and horror. “Twilight” sunk its teeth into four trophies, including best Fantasy Movie, with Breakout Performance winner Taylor Lautner on hand to unveil world premiere footage from the forthcoming “Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Not to be outdone, HBO smash hit “True Blood” garnered four awards, with series creator Alan Ball and cast members Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgård, Sam Trammell and Rutina Wesley in attendance to accept their honors. The star-studded event was held at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and premieres on Spike TV on Tuesday, October 27 (10:00 PM – Midnight, ET/PT).
One of the night’s highlights featured an on stage legend meeting an on screen icon, as Keith Richards was presented the SCREAM Rock Immortal award by Johnny Depp at Spike TV’s “SCREAM 2009.” The living legend, Rolling Stones guitarist and songwriter was greeted by a standing ovation before receiving his introduction to immortality from Depp, who famously patterned his Academy Award-nominated turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in “The Pirates of the Caribbean” movie trilogy after Richards.
Also on hand was Megan Fox, star of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” which captured five awards, including one for Fox’s female lead performance. She accepted the award and reaffirmed her dedication to the franchise’s continued success.
Legendary creator of some of the most famous comic book franchises in history, including Spider-Man, Iron Man and the X-Men, Stan Lee left the audience with mouths agape as the 86-year-old visionary arrived on stage via a giant spider to accept the Comic-Con Icon award from Peter Parker himself, Tobey Maguire.
A franchise that is certain to live long and prosper, the JJ Abrams reboot of “Star Trek” led the way with six honors, including the night’s most prestigious, The Ultimate Scream, accepted by the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner.
The cast of the “Big Bang Theory” introduced a tribute to one of the decade’s most influential science fiction series, “Battlestar Galactica.” A moving cast reunion for a farewell tribute took place, featuring Edward James Olmos, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, James Callis, Kate Vernon, Katee Sackhoff, Michael Trucco, Tahmoh Penikett and executive producer David Eick. Olmos led the crowd in a rousing rendition of “So Say We All” after thanking the passionate “Battlestar Galactica” fanbase for its support over the years.
Spike TV also debuted world premiere and exclusive never-before-seen footage from highly anticipated theatrical releases, including the upcoming Martin Scorsese directed “ Shutter Island ,” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland” starring Johnny Depp, and the upcoming “Star Trek” sequel. Also presented was an extensive preview of the forthcoming ABC series, “V.”
The fourth annual “SCREAM” event featured appearances by the industry’s biggest stars including Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth, Jennifer Carpenter, Eliza Dushku, Harrison Ford, Megan Fox, Morgan Freeman, Jackie Earle Haley, Hugh Jackman, Justin Long, Sam Raimi, John C. Reilly, Christina Ricci, Eli Roth, Liv Tyler and Elijah Wood, among many others.
“For one night only, The Greek Theatre became ‘The Geek Theatre’ as thousands of ravenous fans came together to celebrate their heroes and the films, TV shows and comics they love,” said “SCREAM 2009” co-executive producer Michael Levitt.

Halloween Music With FUNHOUSE Composer John Beal |
10-26-09 6:21pm, Absinthe |
Mark Morton of the Examiner Talks with John Beal Music Composer for FUNHOUSE and TERROR IN THE AISLES.
While his name may not be on the tip of your tongue, musician/composer/arranger John Beal is a true creative dynamo in the world of film and television music. With such credits as being general manager/producer of the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra and the president of Reeltime Creative – a company that provides original score music to marketing campaigns across the spectrum of industry, this is just the proverbial tip of the aural iceberg that is John Beal.
Not only has he provided the scores to over 2000 movie trailers (including 40 of the top-grossing films of all time), but he has also worked with Disney, providing music for attractions in Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and he was the conductor at Walt Disney World’s opening day ceremony in October, 1971.
But horror movie fans have a different memory of Beal. In 1981, he submitted a score to the creepy Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist, Spontaneous Combustion) film The Funhouse. Easily one of the most chilling soundtracks in horror movie canon, Beal preyed upon the viewers’ naivety and innocence and plunged them into a world of unabashed terror.

TV Guide Network Scares the Howl out of Viewers with a Halloween Horror Movie Double Feature |
10-23-09 12:18pm, Absinthe |
While little ghosts and goblins take to the streets in hopes of scoring Halloween treats, TV Guide Network will give viewers a fright with a double feature Hollywood horror movie night. The network will telecast back-to-back feature-length horror films from the Lionsgate film library, including “Bram Stoker’s Dracula’s Guest,” airing Saturday, October 31 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT and “Werewolf Hunter: The Legend of Romasanta,” airing Saturday, October 31 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Based on Bram Stoker's short stories, “Dracula’s Guest” follows the story of two young lovers, Bram and Elizabeth, who are forced apart by her father to determine whether their love is true. Meanwhile, the Count Dracula kidnaps Elizabeth and takes her to his castle where he waits to settle an ancient dispute with her father. Bram sets out across Europe to rescue his true love. “Werewolf Hunter: The Legend of Romasanta” is set in Allariz, Spain where an uproar is caused when mutilated cadavers are discovered in the forest, giving way to the legend of the "Werewolf of Allariz." The film is based on the true-life story of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, a traveling vendor who confesses to the murders of thirteen people and proclaims his innocence due to the curse of Lycanthropy—the supposed or fabled assumption of the appearance of a wolf by a human being.
In addition to the Halloween double feature, TV Guide Network will air “Big Movie Premiere” specials in advance of two major fall horror genre film openings. “Big Movie Premiere: Saw VI” airs Thursday, October 22 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT, before the film’s October 23 theatrical release. In November, the sequel to last year’s blockbuster sensation “Twilight” arrives. “Big Movie Premiere: The Twilight Saga - New Moon” airs Thursday, November 19 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, one day before the November 20 theatrical release.

Hammer Films Still Scare |
10-23-09 12:09pm, Absinthe |
By Stephen Whitty/ The Star-Ledger
It was the studio that screamed.
For not quite 20 years, Britain’s Hammer Films delighted horror fans with an entire shuddering, shrieking menagerie of monsters — from man-made creatures to cursed werewolves, dusty mummies to slippery snake-women.
But then another monster came. And this one held a chain saw.
In the wake of a new wave of slasher films, Hammer’s horrors — which relied heavily on Gothic castles and supernatural creatures — seemed almost quaint.
Young horror fans didn’t want Count Dracula. They wanted Freddy, with his throat-slashing gloves. They knew the real monsters weren’t hiding in Transylvania, but in suburbia, just outside that last house on the left.
And by 1975, Hammer’s monsters packed up their coffins and lab coats and slunk away.
There’s been a small revival though, as a reconstituted Hammer has begun announcing some new projects. Attractive DVD sets have also collected some of their former hits.
And bookshelves are, once again, boasting colorful salutes to the studio’s blood-red history.
The most scholarly is “A History of Horrors” by Denis Meikle (Scarecrow Press, $36.95), the revised edition of what’s become the studio’s standard saga.
Meikle not only describes the making of Hammer’s classic scare shows — “The Curse of Frankenstein,” “Horror of Dracula” — but goes behind the scenes, to look at the studio’s beginnings (and the family dynamics that helped along its end). He also makes a good case for re-appreciating some films — like a novel re-do, “The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll” — that were badly butchered by the censors, and are rarely considered today.
Meikle also describes the studio’s decline calmly, and succinctly. What had once been the company’s strength — well-dressed sets, proper period costumes, a rich company of veteran character actors — began to make its projects seem old and out of step by the late 1960s, as movies like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Night of the Living Dead” featured young stars and modern horrors.
Hammer’s attempts to make its films “relevant,” however — bringing Dracula into swinging London, for example, or adding gratuitous sex — stood out as the last-ditch attempts they were. When the studio’s final film, “To the Devil a Daughter,” turned out to feature a completely nude 16-year-old Natassja Kinski, and a climax that consisted mostly of Richard Widmark and Christopher Lee shouting at each other, it was hard not to murmur “Good riddance.”
Yet so many of those films — “The Curse of the Werewolf,” “The Gorgon,” “The Mummy” — still delight today. Before they fell into a rut — and quickly wore it down into their own grave — Hammer consistently got things right.
Far less serious, and even more fun, is the new “Hammer Glamour” by Marcus Hearn (Titan, $29.95), a lavish coffee-table book devoted to the studio’s other main attraction — the innocent heiresses, busty serving girls or ill-fated parlor maids that usually ended up in the monster’s arms (or sometimes became monsters themselves).
The studio really hit the pin-up heights only a few times — with Ursula Andress, who capitalized on “Dr. No” with the would-be epic “She,” and Raquel Welch, who they put in that famous fur bikini for “One Million Years B.C.” But they never stopped trying, and the book is a veritable cheesecake factory of mostly forgotten ’50s and ’60s starlets like Marie Devereux (“The Countess of Cleavage!”).
It’s also, despite some occasional nude shots, a look at a rather more innocent time.
Madeline Smith, for example, may have have co-starred in “The Vampire Lovers,” a lesbian horror movie (an inescapable fad during the early ’70s), but, she confessed, she “didn’t know what a lesbian was . . . I had no idea what was supposed to be happening on that bed.”
And it’s a cautionary tale, too, as far too many of the profiles end the same way — with the young actresses cycling through a few bad marriages, getting involved with drugs, and ending up back in their small provincial towns (or Scandinavian homelands) wiser, but no wealthier than before.
But it is fun, for baby-boomer monster kids, to catch up again with memories of former scream queens like Veronica Carlson (now retired to Hilton Head) or Ingrid Pitt (still busy with fiction, and her own fan site) or Barbara Shelley (now running an interior-design firm).
And it is a delight to luxuriate, for a little while at least, in those bygone days of Hammer horror — when all the women were sexy (but rarely trashy), all the monsters were bloody (but never disgusting) and for 90 minutes every monster fan was in the safest scary place on earth.

A Minute With Tobin Bell of SAW Horror Films |
10-23-09 12:02pm, Absinthe |
Reuters' Alex Dobuzinskis talks to Tobin Bell (Jigsaw) of the SAW Franchise:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Tobin Bell plays the killer named Jigsaw who ensnares victims in deadly games for the "Saw" horror film franchise that has captivated audiences with the same fervor Jigsaw dedicates to his bloody traps.
"Saw VI," Bell's latest Halloween date with moviegoers, opens on Friday, looking to add to the $665 million in ticket sales the franchise has generated at worldwide box offices since the debut of the first film in 2004.
DVD sales have surpassed 28 million units, and as a result of the films' success, the studio behind the franchise, Lions Gate Entertainment, is now a top horror movie maker.
Bell, 67, got his first break as an actor with a role in the 1988 civil rights drama "Mississippi Burning," but he is best known for playing Jigsaw, a mastermind who forces victims to deal with their own faults and fight to survive.
He spoke to Reuters about what scared him as a child, what inspired him to be an actor and the success of the Saw franchise.
Q: Do you think that Jigsaw has truly noble intentions in some way to get his victims to change for the better, or is he simply using that as a veneer to be cruel?
A: "He's not using anything as a veneer and he's sincere in what he says and what he does. Jigsaw, he doesn't lie. You may not like what he says, or what he does. But he doesn't lie."
Q: Who is the first person in your life you remember, or the first thing, that you ever feared?
A: "The Wicked Witch of the West in 'The Wizard of Oz.' And my father, depending on how much he had had to drink and what he had in his hands. Bless you dad, wherever you are."
Q: Did he ever beat you at all?
A: "Did he ever beat me? No, no, no, no. Did he hit me with a rubber boot one time? Yeah he did. But that's because I had left them in the hall, and he stumbled over them. I lived in Massachusetts so we got a lot of snow, so there was always rubber boots in the hall, ready for action."
Q: Has anyone you've known for a long time told you that they viewed you differently after seeing you as Jigsaw, and that they were more scared of you as a result?
A: "No. I know that's not a very long, flowery answer. But it's very true. No one has said that to me at all."
Q: I'd guess you didn't start out to become a horror film character. When you were in college, what did you study or what were you initially planning to become?
A: "Liberal arts and journalism, I was going to become a writer and be in broadcasting ... And (one) year I went to see a seminar, an evening with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy that was held at (Boston University), and the two of them sat on stage and talked to theater arts students. I snuck in at the back ... and was just fascinated by their career and by their enthusiasm and their gentility.
"I guess in some part of me, I must have thought that I was going to miraculously go to New York and be catapulted into the lovely fame of a Hume Cronyn or a Jessica Tandy, and it doesn't work like that. So 20 years later, I was still working in restaurants and loading trucks and parking cars, and doing all the things that keep actors in the game. I worked, but I wasn't able to make a living as an actor for 15, 18 years, until Alan Parker hired me to do 'Mississippi Burning.'"
Q: I've read that you viewed yourself as more of a romantic lead, not necessarily a horror star. Would you have rather be cast in something like 'Sleepless in Seattle' or 'Saw'?
A: "'Saw,' no question about it ... You can spend 40 years in this business and never be part of as successful a series of films. And commercial success -- after all this is called show business -- commercial success is fleeting. So to be part of something that has been as successful commercially as 'Saw' is rare, so I kneel at the 'Saw' altar.

New Trailer for THE WOLFMAN Remake |
10-23-09 11:50am, Absinthe |
Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar® winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother...and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.
Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.
As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself…one he never imagined existed.
Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III) directs The Wolfman, and six-time Oscar®-winning special effects artist Rick Baker brings his design and makeup talents to transform Del Toro into the fearsome title character.

It’s Up to You to Decide…

About THE FOURTH KIND:
In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document...until now.
Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome , Alaska , where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.
Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.
Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

South African
HORRORFEST FILM FESTIVAL 2009
5th Anniversary
Halloween Season
29 October - 6 November
@ The Labia Theatre, Cape Town, South Africa
www.HORRORFEST.info
For its half decade anniversary, HORRORFEST V is set to yet again prove its place as the most exciting and diverse Halloween-season event on the continent.
Across 29 October - 6 November at the legendary Labia Theatre (Orange Str., Cape Town), expect a myriad of rare-, classic- & indie movies, plus (over 6 hours of) short films (across 3 collections) on the big screen; special pre-release screenings of 2 new cinematic releases; Halloween dress-up; a live soundtrack performed to the screening of a silent horror/chiller by THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE (consisting of members from TERMINATRYX, LARK and other talented special guests), a new literary addition; and of course cool prizes & give-aways (including a sizable production prize for the best locally produced short flick).
HORROFEST V Special Guest:
Unfortunately due to pre-production work on his current project, the months of planning and co-ordinating to get AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis to attend the festival with his classic film did not work out. The movie will still be screened, but we are awaiting word from his publicists on the chances of a Skye link-up with him after the screening of American Werewolf on Sunday 1 November.
Our thanks go out to The Townhouse Hotel & Conference Centre and Virgin Air for their assistance.
The Movies:
Since its genesis, the HORRORFEST has screened a wide range of chilling movies from around the globe including the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Finland, Spain, Canada, Pakistan, Italy etc., with everything from vampires and zombies, to ghosts, aliens and madmen. While not limited to this theme, the 2009 HORRORFEST is set to be the year of the Werewolf!
So what better time to screen the genre-defining AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON ! In addition its brand new feature length retrospective documentary BEWARE THE MOON will also be screened. It features great interviews with all the major cast & crew (incl. director John Landis and special make-up FX artist Rick Baker), and revisits many of the key locations.
The HorrorFest continues its tradition of giving cinefans the opportunity to see exciting movies on the big screen, with many rare ones which may not even reach South African video stores, now or in the future.
The full line-up includes:
> PANDORUM - the sneak preview of this Sci-Fi/Horror movie (starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster) will open the festival, with HORRORFEST attendees getting to see this outerspace chiller before the rest of the country.
> The festival will close with another pre-release screening - ZOMBIELAND, starring Woody Harrelson (arrive like a zombie and win cool stuff).
> STRIGOI, a phenomenal take on the vampire myth, shot in Romania where many of these beliefs still run very strong. (Toronto After Dark winner).
> T.M.A. - The Mystery Address, an amazingly atmospheric piece with an artist returning to his childhood home where the dark and lethal secrets literally boil to the surface. These two movies were also shot on 35mm as opposed to the current much preferred and more affordable HD format.
> COLIN is an innovative zombie movie from the UK with an interesting twist - it is seen from the zombie's perspective! (2009 Raindance winner).
> BIKINI GIRLS ON ICE throws together two key ingredients of the classic slasher film, girls and a madman!
>The highly unlikely sport of cricket is the focal point of the revenge killer spoof I KNOW HOW MANY RUNS YOU SCORED LAST SUMMER (features Miss Nude Australia Arianna Starr in a cameo).
> THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE is an shockingly original and disturbing take on the demented doctor theme. (Stars German superstar Dieter Laser.
> The SHADOW REALM Short Film Collection will again feature an amazing array from here and abroad, across 3 feature length chapters.

> DIE-NER (get-it?) is a horror-comedy of errors. When a killer makes a diner his new slaying ground, he is faced with the dilemma of his victims refusing to stay dead! Features South African born actress Maria Olsen.
> WICKED WORLD will have its world premier at HORRORFEST V. Shot on 16mm, this movie started its journey in the 1990s & was completed just before the festival.

> THE BLOOD APE represents the grindhouse-underground-trash contingent, celebrating ‘70s exploitation in all its gory glory as an escaped ape wreaks havoc.
> THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence) - This shocking and highly original movie depicts a demented surgeon’s psychotic plan to realize his unspeakable creation. Prepare yourself! Starring German superstar Dieter Laser.
> In WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON a reporter is sent to Hungary where he’s bitten by a werewolf... he also happens to be having an affair with the U.S. President’s daughter!
> BLOOD NIGHT: The Legend Of Mary Hachet - A haunting urban legend materializes with a group of teenagers celebrating a bloody anniversary. Stars Bill Moseley (from The Devil's Rejects) & is the 2009 Shockerfest winner.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET's New Freddy Defends His Face |
10-20-09 8:15am, Absinthe |
Early reviews of Freddy Krueger's new look have been mixed, based on a glimpse in the recent teaser trailer for the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street, compelling producer Brad Fuller to say things aren't final yet.
Now we get the new Freddy himself, Jackie Earle Haley, defending the new makeup, which we're told will be more realistic.
We see only a glimpse of Freddy's face in the trailer for the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but Haley thinks we'll love it. SCI FI Wire talked to Haley on the red carpet for the Scream Awards at the Greek Theater in Hollywood last night, where he told us how much time it takes to make him into the stuff of nightmares.
"It's so cool," Haley said. "Andrew Clement [the makeup artist] did an awesome job redesigning the makeup. You know, you can imagine since they're making it, going back in time and starting over. Robert Englund did such an amazing job of owning Freddy Krueger, you know, we need to pay homage to that but at the same time be a little bit fresh and new, while still being familiar. So Andrew and Sam [Bayer, the director,] kind of created a new look for this guy that I think is awesome. Of course, we've got the hat and the glove and all that stuff. It should be awesome."
Haley said the process takes three and a half hours, start to finish. "It started at six and a half hours, because they 'art it in' [i.e., play around with it]," he said. "At first it's all about art, and once it's like, 'Oh, this is what it is,' we got it down to three hours and 20 minutes, I think. And then an hour to get out. And that's before I even step foot on set. I've got a four-and-a-half-hour day of makeup."
Sounds like enough to make anyone into a mass murderer. A Nightmare on Elm Street opens April 30, 2010.
Head on over to scyfy.com and watch the trailer and decide for yourself!
