Topic: Rigormarole, by Michael Arnzen  (Read 1340 times)

Rigormarole, by Michael Arnzen « 06/17/05 at 11:54am » Quote | Modify
Often hilarious, always scary, Rigormarole collects a score of dark poems for the walking dead. Arnzen experiments with form while always remaining readable and entertaining, treating zombies in ways that makes us rethink everything we assume about them. The book also features original quirky sketches by John Skipp, best-selling novelist and editor of the zombie books, Book of the Dead and Mondo Zombie.  Rigormarole is a rare treat for horror fans offering an unusual approach to the genre of the undead brain-eater, by a pair of its most notoriously creative practitioners.

An eclectic and often inspired collection, Arnzen provides for both those that love zombies and those that are sick of them, because you cannot help but laugh at some of these while being amazed at the zen-like depth of others.  Traveling from standard zombie fair into new mythos and creative word play, the subject matter of the collection is as diverse as the rhythm and meter used in the individual poems.  Through the varied use of third vs first person and pensive vs whimsical, Arnzen offers something for everyone.

Skulls are Too Funny
the perpetual simper of the dead
man’s bony palate – teeth grinning
over his choppers like he’s still
got a secret – can’t be wiped off
his face no matter how easy
his smirk was to flay,
no matter how hard you tear
the jawbone, no matter what –
he’s laughing at you,
so laugh along.

Breaking up the zombie fun and finesse are some equally beautiful and bizarre original drawings from John Skipp.  From the juvenile fun of stick figures to the more surreal sketches of partial features, the artwork is by no means meant to be anything other than tongue in cheek – occasionally, literally.

Rating?  There were only three of the twenty-three that I did not enjoy on some level.  Overall, I loved it, and at the low low price of $9.95 how could it be anything less that 4 Stars  If you’re a fan of Arnzen, his ‘Gorelets’, zombies, and/or poetry, this is a fun add to your shelf - A shining fleck of color in the bland fecal matter that is currently the flooded zombie market!!
